How to Choose the Best Kitchen Layout for Your Home

Choosing the layout for your house is the first and foremost on the list of things to do, whether you’re building a new one or renovating your old space. The kitchen layout is one of the essential and crucial aspects of ensuring a functional and practical kitchen area. Whether you want a small and compact kitchen or a spacious one, it’s vital to use all the resources you have.

The layout of your kitchen depends on many factors, including the kitchen floor plan, the décor, and your budget, but there are always ways to get the best out of the space. There are four main factors to consider before deciding on the layout.

How to Choose the Best Kitchen Layout for Your Home
  • Functionality: Not all pre-built cabinets are suitable for every kitchen. You might have to change it to cater to your needs with additions such as a pull-in bin or extra cabinet spaces.
  • Storage: If you are someone who likes to have everything to be in reach while you work in your kitchen, you’ll need larger cabinets than usual.
  • Aesthetics: Large, spacious cabinets doesn’t mean they should be boring. You can get fancy, beautiful cabinets that suit your home décor and flooring.
  • Cost: Renovating your kitchen or building it from scratch does not need to break your bank. You can find cost-effective as well as some of the best functional kitchen designs and layouts to revamp your kitchen space.

Common Kitchen Layouts

One Wall Kitchen

If you want a compact, functional kitchen design with a simple layout, having a one-wall kitchen would be a good option. As the name suggests, the kitchen would primarily have only one wall, with overhead and base cabinets, offering you a clean and compact space to work with. Having this layout helps you utilise all the space you have to your advantage and offers an aesthetic space that could also highlight your living space. This is an excellent option for a small, narrow space. However, the countertop space could be limited.

L-Shaped Kitchen Layout

The cabinets and shelves are installed on and between two perpendicular walls, giving it a subtle room-like appeal and enough space to work. You have more space to work on and can be used in a small kitchen space too. To make it practical and functional, you might need the help of professionals who know how to work the corners and make the most of it. One of the most significant advantages of an L-shaped kitchen is that you can place the appliances however you want.

The Galley Kitchen Layout

One of the most common kitchen layouts is the Galley Kitchen. The two rows of cabinets facing each other create a small passage in between, giving you space to work around. The simple design utilises every bit of space, offering you a fully functional and aesthetic kitchen. It is best for a slightly wider kitchen, allowing the sink and the cooktop on separate sides, creating more workbench area. This layout also makes it easier to access items from the cabinets.

U-Shaped Kitchen Layout

One method of creating more storage and workbenchis to utilise a U-shaped layout. This means you can generate more storage and bench area with the same space when all three or four walls are fitted with cabinets. However, MS&MR Kitchens recommends a minimum of 1.4m x 1.4m space between the benches. This ensures enough working space while allowing at least two people to enter/leave the area. You can also extend one space of the “U” towards a part of the fourth side and add stools at the other end to talk with family members and guests.

Island Kitchen Layout

An island kitchen layout would be perfect in homes where you enjoy an open layout for the living space. The island allows multiple entrances into the kitchen space and reduces the requirements for distances between benches. In general, a roughly 1000mm distance between two benches is sufficient for opening dishwashers, overs, pull out drawers and bins. It acts as a place to enjoy the cooking and prepping space with the family and allows the free flow of traffic. The small l-shaped kitchen with island bench layout is a social space for families that often hang around in the kitchen. An L-shaped kitchen will also go well with an island kitchen, adding extra workspace.

The Peninsula Kitchen Layout

The peninsula is when an island bench is jointed to the main bench on one end. Some U-shape and G-shape kitchens are good examples of the Peninsula kitchen designs. The purpose of the Peninsula is to provide more storage and workbench area. A peninsula kitchen can be an interactive space where you can work, eat, and socialise comfortably without the kitchen feeling too crowded. However, the entrance to the kitchen must be large enough to fit appliances such as the fridge to enter, especially for the G-shaped kitchen.
